Term 1 Newsletter
A very warm welcome to Room 16! My name is Mary Jenkins. My husband Steve and I moved to Queenstown 26 years ago. We have three sons, two at university and one starting work in Wellington this year.
We have a great term ahead, with an inquiry theme of “Sounds of Aotearoa”. This will incorporate science investigations into how sound is created as well as focus on Maori music and song. At the end we will celebrate with a Maori welcome, hangi and class performances.
Stationery will be issued as soon as it is paid for. I don’t mind if the books aren’t covered but if you do cover them could you please put large name labels on them so their names are clear and don’t rub off. Each child will also need a bookbag and a pencil case.
Homework will start with nightly reading. If your child is still learning to read, a book will come home Monday-Thursday for them to read to you. If your child is a fluent reader (level 22+) they can read a chapter book of their choice. The best way for children to improve in reading is to get lots of “reading mileage” so reading for pleasure is greatly to be encouraged. There are easy chapter books at both the school and public library catering for this age level; see me if you want a list of recommended books. School library books can be exchanged at lunchtime or on our library day on Wednesday. More information on homework will be sent home soon.
.
Room 16 PE time with Paula Nichols is on Tuesday at 9.10. It may be a good idea for your child to have a spare pair of older running shoes at school that can be worn for sport, so the new shoes can be kept clean. Daily swimming lessons will commence Week 6 and run for three weeks.
Please feel free to come in anytime. Next Wednesday is Back to School night, starting at 7pm in the Hall. I will be in Room 16 from 7.30-8pm and I look forward to meeting you.
